Tesla debuts 'Share by URL' video feature in China

Tesla's latest app update, version 4.11 includes a new feature for sending videos from your phone to your vehicle’s infotainment screen for users in China.

Twitter user @42how_ shared details of the feature and how it works:

42HOW, a Chinese Media publisher focused on EVs shared a photo from Tesla with instructions on the new “Send to Vehicle” infotainment feature.

The photo, translated from Chinese, reads, “Simple one-tap screen projection. Chase dramas on the big screen for ‘special’ fun.” The photo continues, “Tesla app refreshed. Update to V4.11.0 to realize the large screen linkage between mobile phone and machine.”

The photo also includes details on how to use the feature:

Step 1: Open Tesla App, Settings > turn on "Read Clipboard at launch"

Step 2: Open the mobile Tencent video / Youku / IQIYI > Copy video link

Sort 3: Open Tesla App, click "Send to Vehicle" Watch in your Tesla.

Hopefully, we see this feature expand outside of China soon. A similar ‘send to’ feature currently exists for YouTube and Google Maps, which allows you to share a location or video directly with the Tesla app, which will then send it to your vehicle.

It looks like this new feature is giving users an alternative method of sharing videos with their vehicles. It could be useful when someone shares a URL with you that you'd like to play in the vehicle instead of having to open the specific app first.

Tesla is also set to integrate Steam on its infotainment system with a demo coming in August, according to CEO Elon Musk.

Elon Musk has hinted on Twitter that Tesla will be adding the capability to automatically configure side mirrors for each driver, possibly leveraging the cabin camera to do so.

The tweet came in response to Twitter user James Stephenson (@ICannot_Enough) who asked the CEO directly:

“Hey, @elonmusk: will Teslas ever be able to automatically adjust the side mirror settings for new drivers? (based on 3D position of the driver’s eyes + comparing against the fleet’s internal camera data & side mirror settings)”

“Yes, but side mirrors won’t be needed in a self-driving future. That said, we will add autoconfigure to side mirrors”, said Musk.

The Tesla CEO pointed out the side mirrors cause roughly 5% range reduction at highway speeds, presumably why he wants them removed in a full self-driving future.

Currently, Tesla side mirrors auto tilt, auto fold and auto dim, so automatic configuration seems like a logical next step.

Manual adjustment of mirrors by the driver is known to include particular weaknesses inherent to biases and comforting tendencies of the driver who is making the manual adjustment.

One known bias or propensity in operators in manual mirror adjustment is a tendency to capture a portion of the vehicle's side in the field of vision. As a result of this tendency, blind spots on the outer portions of the side-view mirrors are increased.

This tendency to skew the mirrors inboard creates larger blind spots in visual zones particularly relevant to making lane changes, which can lead to more accidents.

Drivers are known to forego making mirror adjustments or set the angles haphazardly due to the time required to set all three mirrors accurately.

This new feature would provide a way to quickly and reliably set mirror adjustment angles automatically.

This news comes on the heels of Tesla releasing cloud-enabled driver profiles in update 2022.24, which let you carry your settings from one vehicle to another.

If you’ve bought an electric car, you know by now how frustrating it can be to find somewhere to fast-charge it. That’s why Tesla initially rolled out its Supercharger network of high-voltage chargers, and now they seem to be getting ready to allow other US electric vehicles to take advantage of the widely available network.

Although there haven't been many specifics on how the company would do this in the US, Tesla has made it clear that its intention is to make the global network of high-voltage Level 3 charging stations available to non-Tesla EV owners, and it has been running test programs abroad for several months now. According to Twitter user Sawyer Merritt, on the evening of August 16, 2022, Tesla offered a brief glimpse into how the program would work, by temporarily providing non-Tesla owners with membership options on the Tesla App.

It’s unclear whether the company made a mistake by briefly providing access to the program or they were just trying it out, but the membership options remained available through the app from around 9:30 PM to just before midnight, according to Merritt.

It seems like Tesla will be making a "pay per use" option and a membership advertised at just $0.99 per month available to non-Tesla EV owners. Merritt said that each account requires a separate subscription, and there is a daily charge cap of five sessions.

Merritt highlighted the cheap $0.99 monthly membership charge, especially when compared to the $4 per month that Electrify America charges, suggesting that Tesla's price of about $1 may be an effort to undercut its competitors.

We know Tesla is getting ready to launch the network in North America by creating a new CCS adaptor for non-Tesla EV owners after launching the network in Europe, where Superchargers use the industry-standard CCS plug. Although recently there has been a push by Aptera for Tesla's connector to become the charging standard.

The shift, which is anticipated to take place before the end of the year, is necessary in order to access additional federal funds intended to hasten the development of EV charging stations. As electric cars become increasingly popular, a higher priority will be placed on making sure drivers have easy access to charging stations for their cars. Tesla has a dominant market share in the electric car space, so it makes sense that they’d offer up the Supercharger network as a service to drivers of other electric vehicles.

This decision won't be without criticism, though, as the network is one of the biggest benefits of owning a Tesla and is significantly larger than any other fast-charging network in the US. However, the network can get congested at times, and it's unclear what will happen if more EVs are added to it.

Tesla is expected to upgrade Superchargers to include the CCS connector in addition to Tesla's proprietary connector.

Tesla's upcoming Supercharger redesign is also expected to be out later this year.
